In September we asked our Facebook and Instagram followers a simple question: what is your favorite locally owned coffee shop in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County, and what do you order there? No chains allowed. One commenter, drawn at random, won a $20 gift card to one of the shops they named.

Twelve people answered and named ten shops between them. That is a small poll, and we are not pretending otherwise. But the answers came with real orders attached, which is more useful than another list of places with “cozy vibes.” This is that list, grouped by how many people named each shop, with every address checked in October 2026.

Congratulations to KJ, who won the gift card and managed to name three shops in one comment. We are treating that as a sign of a well-caffeinated reader.

The shops with the most votes

Moxie33 Coffee Co., McGaheysville

10018 Spotswood Trail (US 33), McGaheysville. Three readers named Moxie33, more than any shop inside the city. It is a specialty coffee shop and bakery on the way to Massanutten, with baked goods made in its own kitchen and a menu that runs from drip coffee and cold brew to smoothies and seasonal drinks.

The order our readers named: an iced white chocolate mocha. If you live on the east side of the county or commute toward Elkton, this is the stop.

Broad Porch Coffee Co., Court Square

47 Court Square, Harrisonburg. Broad Porch tied Moxie33 with three mentions. The Court Square flagship opened in 2024 after a two-year renovation of the old Artful Dodger space, with a 50-foot skylight and a full bakery kitchen. The coffee is roasted at the company’s roastery in Luray, where Broad Porch started.

The order our readers named: a brown sugar cinnamon cappuccino.

Merge Coffee Company, Mount Clinton Pike and JMU

821A Mount Clinton Pike, Harrisonburg, plus a counter in JMU’s Union Building at 261 East Grace Street. Two readers named Merge, and one paired it with Broad Porch as a two-shop answer. Merge roasts its own beans in the Shenandoah Valley, and its single-origin coffees have scored well with national reviewers. The North cafe on Mount Clinton Pike is the one with room to sit.

Harvest Table, Dayton

3092 John Wayland Highway, Dayton. A breakfast and coffee spot on Route 42 at Dayton, known for breakfast biscuits, quiche, and coffee flights with flavors that change by season. The order our reader named: the coffee flight, which lets you try several flavored lattes in small pours instead of committing to one.

Black Sheep Coffee, East Market Street

80 East Market Street, Harrisonburg. Black Sheep has been pouring since 2015. In 2023 the owner bought a building a few blocks from the original Ice House location and moved the shop there, which is why older guides still list it on South Liberty Street. The order our reader named: a toffee nut mocha.

Java and Jam, Broadway

North Main Street, Broadway, inside the J and B Country Store. The newest shop on the list. Java and Jam opened in April 2026 on the upper level of the historic country store in downtown Broadway, serving coffee, tea, and homemade pastries. The order our reader named: a lavender latte with oat milk. If you are house hunting in the northern end of the county, this is now the morning stop.

Bella Gelato and Pastries, West Water Street

49 West Water Street, Harrisonburg. Better known for gelato and pastries, but one reader’s whole answer was “espresso,” and this is where they get it. A dessert-first shop with an espresso bar.

Drifters Cafe, the Ice House

217 South Liberty Street, Harrisonburg. Drifters started in 2022 as a mobile cafe built out of a pop-up camper and opened its Harrisonburg storefront in August 2023 in the Ice House space Black Sheep had left.

Bridgewater Coffee Co. at Dayton

90A Main Street, Dayton. The name still says Bridgewater, but the shop moved. After nearly nine years in Bridgewater, owner Mary Foster reopened in Dayton in July 2025 with a bigger kitchen, more seating, Belgian waffles on the menu, and a plant wall where customers swap cuttings. Open Monday through Saturday.

Chestnut Ridge Coffee Roasters, West Gay Street

76 West Gay Street, Harrisonburg. A small roastery and cafe near Magpie Diner. Chestnut Ridge roasts on site and sells bags to take home, which makes it the pick if you want local beans for your own kitchen.
